The Los Angeles Angels, based in Anaheim, California, are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team known for their vibrant fan base and a rich history that includes a World Series title in 2002. The team is part of the American League West division and has been home to numerous Hall of Fame players, including the legendary Nolan Ryan and current superstar Shohei Ohtani. The Angels play their home games at Angel Stadium, which has been their venue since 1966.
Did you know that the Angels were originally known as the "Los Angeles Angels" when they were founded in 1961, but they underwent several name changes and relocations before settling on the current name? They briefly played as the "California Angels," before becoming the "Anaheim Angels" and finally reverting back to the "Los Angeles Angels" in 2005.
Despite being a team with a rich history, the Angels have struggled to maintain consistent success in recent decades. Although they won the World Series in 2002, they have only made it to the playoffs a handful of times since then. One lesser-known fact is that the Angels were the first team in MLB history to have a designated hitter, even before the rule was officially adopted in the league. This occurred in 1973 when they used a player to bat for their pitcher in an exhibition game prior to the official rule change. Updated: August 18, 2025 at 6:12 PM
